Saturday at a crowded “San Giorgio Auditorium” in Pistoia, Rescue Press upheld tradition: a new neonatal transport system was donated to the 118 emergency services, promoting a stronger culture of safe transport for children in ambulances.
PISTOIA – It is heartwarming to witness men and women showing their affection for something so beautiful and unique. It was both a joy and a tremendous honor to be invited to the commemoration of the 30th anniversary of N&A, the journal of Italian emergency services. Alongside hundreds of attendees, we reflected on the legacy left by Giorgio Patrizio Nannini. We highlighted this important day with two articles featuring numerous testimonials. Today, however, in just a few lines, we’d like to share how you keep this spirit alive. How Rescue Press, thanks to its followers, can make a difference. It’s our very own “Day of Self-Esteem,” and we want to share with you the responsibility of this small yet crucial gesture.
Children First, Remembering Giorgio Nannini
Yes, because for Giorgio Patrizio Nannini, prioritizing children’s needs was essential. In a 118 system that was still grappling with adult care, pediatric patients were almost completely overlooked. That’s why the project 1-1-8-bimbi.it was groundbreaking. It strongly emphasized the need for specialized transport for children and neonatal patients. Back then, out-of-hospital precipitous births weren’t as common as they are today. Now, however, there are over 500 out-of-hospital births every year. How can we safely manage their transfer to hospitals without undue risks?
A Simple Neonatal Transport System for ambulance in emergencies
Following the success of the POBEx2 courses and the first donation made last year to the Children’s Hospital of Parma, a new idea emerged: why not donate a neonatal transport kit to a 118 system? Let’s set an example. So, we contacted a company producing the most adaptable and efficient pediatric neonatal transport set available on the market: the SAPLACOR AEGIS NEOMATE WRAP. Thanks to the extraordinary cooperation of its founder, Mary Chiesa, and Marketing Manager, Kayley Watson, we received a complete restraint system. At the end of the commemoration for Giorgio Patrizio Nannini, we donated the system to Piero Paolini, the current SIEMS president and long-time director of Pistoia’s 118 and the national CROSS system. Dr. Andrea Nicolini’s department will oversee its integration into the system.
A Vision for the Future of Pre-Hospital Care in Italy: Let’s Build It Together
As Gianluca Ghiselli, Medical Director of Azienda Zero in the Piedmont Region, pointed out, “All the documentation from N&A should be made accessible to everyone. Many of its articles are still incredibly relevant today. Only Giorgio Patrizio Nannini could think so far ahead. Today, we must focus on new technologies with applications that benefit patients.” Technologies, however, must never forget the central role of rescuers: “We achieved a lot with Giorgio,” recalled Paolo Rosi, director of the regional SUEM department in Veneto. “Revisiting these topics opens up so many possibilities for community medicine and today’s 118 system. Small but impactful measures, like teaching children the easiest way to dial for help using the dots between 1, 1, and 8, truly make a difference.” “Today, Nannini,” concluded Pietro Paolini, director of CROSS in Pistoia, “would have turned 70. He would have embraced this vision and this moment. He would have also addressed the issues of our system with his characteristic vigor, launching important discussions for building a robust emergency response system.”
A Donation Every Year: A Matter of Dreams and Education
With this second donation, Rescue Press has stayed true to its strong moral commitment. Each year, thanks to the efforts of our collaborators, sponsors, supporters, and subscribers, we sustain a unique online service. We are a technical journal of information and opinion. We are also an online academy, providing rescuers with a space for discussion. Additionally, we serve as a training center, spreading best practices to be applied whenever needed. That’s why we strive to take the lead in doing something for others. Sometimes we succeed as volunteers. Other times, a more tangible and impactful gesture is necessary. Remembering someone who spent 30 years supporting the emergency system was the perfect occasion to remind ourselves that sometimes, it’s the small actions that inspire a better world. And at Christmas, we can dream that the children transported using the donated SAPLACOR system in Pistoia may one day grow up to become innovators in the field of pre-hospital emergency care.
